Here is how this works in practice. The islands are built of honey-coloured globigerina limestone, so a board drawn from real Maltese locations holds together tonally in a way assembled stock rarely does. The visual vocabulary runs deep — the baroque grandeur of Valletta and St John's Co-Cathedral, the medieval stone of Mdina, the raw scale of the Knights' fortifications, the prehistoric forms of the megalithic temples, the working colour of Marsaxlokk's luzzu boats.
