SCENE 01 / DP SERVICES
Director of Photography Services
Experienced DPs for film, TV, commercials, and documentaries throughout Malta.
Here is how this works in practice. A Director of Photography shapes the visual narrative of a production through creative decisions about lighting, camera movement, lens selection, and composition. Malta's extraordinary Mediterranean light, honey-colored limestone build style, and the famous Mediterranean Film Studios water tank have attracted major shoots from Gladiator to Game of Thrones, setting up a local cinematography community skilled in large-scale global shoots.
Here is the short of it. We connect you with skilled Directors of Photography who know both the creative and practical demands of your production. Whether you are shooting at Mediterranean Film Studios or on location in the ancient streets of Mdina, our team matches your project with DPs who bring the right visual sensibility, supported by the Malta Film Commission's competitive cash rebates incentive.

On Location
From the horizon tank at Malta Film Studios in Kalkara to the honey-coloured bastions of Valletta and the medieval streets of Mdina, our Directors of Photography read the island's Mediterranean light the way Ridley Scott's crews did on 'Gladiator'.
Here is how this works in practice. We match each production with a Director of Photography whose reel, temperament and tech ease genuinely fit the brief, then build the camera department around them. Our team handles tech scouts, lens testing and shot-list development before a single frame is shot, and on the day the DP leads camera, grip and lighting as one unit.
Here is the short of it. Malta's compactness is a working advantage here: a DP can scout a Grand Harbour exterior, a Mdina interior and a tank set in a single day, then return with crew the next morning without losing hours to travel. We source camera packages through Malta Film Studios' rental division and partner houses, supplementing from Sicily or the UK when a specific body or lens set is needed, and our DPs are as well at home on ARRI Alexa, Sony Venice and RED. Because English is an official language, the DP communicates directly with global directors, producers and local crew without an interpreter, keeping the creative conversation fast and unambiguous from prep through wrap.
Here is the breakdown. Malta has serviced global shoots since the 1920s. Its cinematographers have grown up with the qualities that draw filmmakers here: roughly 300 days of sunshine a year, the long golden glow off globigerina limestone, and a clarity of Mediterranean light that flatters both period and today's work.
Here is what that looks like on the ground. A DP planning a shoot in Valletta — the UNESCO baroque capital the Knights of St John raised after the Great Siege of 1565 — works with the Malta Film Commission as a one-stop liaison for heritage access, while the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage governs interiors such as St John's Co-Cathedral, home to Caravaggio's 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist'. The same island has stood in for ancient Rome at Fort Ricasoli, the Holy Land, and King's Landing in 'Game of Thrones'. A cash rebates of up to 40% on eligible expenditure, among the most competitive in the Mediterranean, means a strong DP and a well resourced camera department stay within reach even on tightly budgeted schedules.
FAQ
Our DP Network
What experience levels of DPs do you provide?
Here is the breakdown. We give DPs across all experience levels: emerging cinematographers for indie and low-budget projects, mid-level DPs with solid commercial and documentary credits, and senior DPs with feature film and global broadcast experience. We match experience to your budget and project needs.
How do you match DPs to projects?
We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist DPs with relevant genre experience and aesthetic alignment. You receive curated showreels and can request direct conversations with candidates before booking.
What camera systems do your DPs work with?
Here is what that looks like on the ground. Our DPs are proficient across all major cinema camera systems including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many specialize in specific systems but all are adaptable to production needs and rental availability.
Do DPs come with their own equipment?
Some owner-operator DPs bring personal camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We set up gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned gear, rental houses, or production-given gear.
Can you provide international DPs for shoots in Malta?
Yes. We can source global DPs for shoots in Malta, handling work permits and logistics. We also give Maltese DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.
What's included in DP day rates?
Standard DP day rates cover on-set cinematography services during production hours. Pre-production work (tech scouts, shot listing, meetings) is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours are extra based on project scope.
