Here is how this works in practice. The gaffer and lighting team translate the Director of Photography's vision into practical lighting setups on set. In Malta, gaffers work at Malta Film Studios — one of the Mediterranean's top production facilities — and on location across Valletta's baroque streets, Gozo, and Mdina, designing lighting for both studio and exterior work.

Here is the short of it. We assemble skilled gaffer and lighting teams matched to your production's scale, style, and tech needs. With gear sourced through Malta Film Studios' rental division and local suppliers, our team sets up crew availability, gear sourcing, and department logistics so your lighting team arrives fully prepared.

On Location

Our gaffers and lighting crews translate the DP's vision into practical setups, whether that is a controlled night build on the backlots of Malta Film Studios or a sensitive interior in a baroque Valletta palazzo.

Here is how this works in practice. We assemble gaffer and lighting teams sized to the production — a best boy and a small electrical crew for a documentary interview, or a full department with riggers for a large-scale night exterior. Our team works from the DP's lighting plan, sourcing fixtures through Malta Film Studios' rental division and local suppliers, and supplementing from Sicily or the UK when a specific HMI, tungsten or LED package is needed.

Here is the short of it. Malta's compactness keeps lighting logistics efficient: a crew can strike a Valletta interior and pre-rig a Mdina location for the next morning without losing a day to transport. A single power packs and truck base can serve several nearby setups. Our gaffers are skilled at the demands the island imposes — running cable through narrow heritage streets, lighting limestone interiors where heat and fixture placement are off-limits, and balancing the strong Mediterranean daylight that floods exterior work. Because crews here are fluent in English, the gaffer communicates directly with the DP and director across prep and shoot.

Here is the breakdown. Malta has lit global shoots since the 1920s. Its electrical crews have grown up with the qualities that define the island's look: the long golden glow off honey-coloured globigerina limestone and roughly 300 days of sunshine a year. Lighting a period exterior in Valletta — the UNESCO baroque capital built by the Knights of St John after the 1565 Great Siege — or in Mdina, the medieval Silent City that played King's Landing in 'Game of Thrones', means working sympathetically with stone that already carries warmth.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Heritage interiors fall under the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. The Malta Film Commission acts as a one-stop liaison for the access and council permissions a lighting rig needs. The island has supplied electrical departments for 'Gladiator', 'Troy' and Ridley Scott's recent returns, so the experience base is deep. A cash rebates of up to 40% on eligible expenditure helps shoots resource the crew numbers and fixture inventory that ambitious lighting demands.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

Here is the breakdown. The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Maltese rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are bilingual Maltese-English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.

Productions in Malta that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
